Almost everybody celebrates easter (more in the country than in the city), but few know the exact meaning of these days. That is why we have prepared a small overview that will guide you throughout the Holy Week. So what exactly are the days of the Holy Week?

“Try to ask your parents and grandparents, perhaps you will be surprised how they spent their time during Holy Week when they were young,” say our personal assistants.

Blue monday

The name probably got the color of the fabric that gets displayed on the altar on this day. Another interpretation, however, states that the origin of the day’s designation is elsewhere. It was not possible to work on this day, so people often drank on Sunday.

Gray or also Yellow Tuesday

On this day, households were thoroughly cleaned and spider webs swiped out. However, this day, like the previous Monday, was not rich in rituals and traditions. Those were more in the next few days. The name is allegedly derived from an ash color.

Ugly wednesday sometimes called Black, Sazometná, nebo Smetná

The name Sazometna or Smetna was obtained because the chimneys were being swept this day, and Ugly because on this day, Judas betrayed Christ. According to tradition, you may not frown on this day, otherwise you will frown on all wednesdays of the year. The usual meal was on this day is the lens, or peas.

Green Thursday

The name is derived from a green robe that was worn on that day. Tradition also commands eating a green diet, such as spinach or cabbage. The last bells are bells, which will sound on the White Saturday. It is a reminder of Jesus’ last supper in the Gethsemane Garden, when he was arrested. According to tradition, bakers bake a Judas from bread dough. It is said that whoever eats it with honey, will be healthy.

Good Friday

A day of mourning, without bells. It was on this very day that Jesus was crucified. People should be fasting and not eat meat. It is said that this very day has magical power – the earth opens to expose its treasures. According to tradition, on this day people must not move soil or land, close stores, lend anything, or wash clothes, because it would soak in Christ’s blood.

White Saturday

The name was derived from white robes, which is a sign of purity and the wiping of sins by baptism, and also from the white clothes in which Jesus was buried. The Baptism ceremony, when the Baptists were received in white robes, was held on the so-called Great Night from Saturday to Sunday. Christ was raised from the dead. According to tradition, this day was thoroughly for cleansing and whitening and preparing for a glorious Sunday. After sunset, there are so-called vigilies, in which the fire is ignited, and from it the Easter candle. Again, the bells are ringing.

Easter Sunday

The festive day when the lambs and the christian dishes are baked. Everyone should taste to find the lost way. Low-fat food should be eaten. On the tables would be, sheep’s meat, a roasted lamb, but also a doves. Eggs must not be missing on the table. This day is also called Ressurection Sunday and celebrates Mass.

Easter Monday also Red Monday

The day most people connect with the traditional whipping spree. Sometimes it is also called red, and it is supposed to be according to the color that the eggs were being dyed most often.
